In 2018 I joined the infectious diseases group at University of Turin, to develop a project based on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock, especially pigs, and its linkage with parameters such as biosecurity, vaccination, animal welfare and antimicrobial usage (AMU). The title of my phD project is "Occurrence of Extended spectrum β-lactamases-producing Enterobacterales and Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in swine farms and association with sanitary and productive parameters". With this 3-year project, I am studying mainly two bacterial groups, MRS (methicillin resistant staphylococci) and ESBL- producing Enterobacterales, particularly E. coli. To find out these resistant bacteria in healthy animals and in farms, I perform phenotypic and genotypic microbiological tests. Levels of farm biosecurity is also checked every time I go to a swine farm to take sample, and, information about vaccinations and treatments are taken into account. Productive parameters such as mortality will be used to assess animal health status. All the data are gathered to classify farms based on the level of AMR risk. Furthermore, with this study it will be easier to understand if farm workers are exposed to resistant bacterial species.
