PhD project: "Application of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) as a new approach to study antimicrobials effects in farm animals". Supervisor: professor Tiziana Francesca Cannizzo.
The main aim of this project will be to investigate the application of NGS technologies, as a useful technique to detect AM use in food-producing animals and to better understand the effects on host tissues. Decreasing cost of NGS technology and development of bioinformatic pipelines have rendered RNA-seq an affordable and user-friendly technique for whole gene expression profiling in all the species. In this context, a top-down systems biology approach to examine AMs induced changes in some tissues of farm animals will be carried out. In particular, RNA-seq will be performed on samples from broiler and dairy cattle therapeutically treated with AMs. The data obtained will permit to identify possible gene involved in host response following AMs treatment. Subsequently, we will validate the main differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by quantitative PCR or Droplet-Digital PCR.
